Lisa’s Unofficial HPC Blog

There are some cool things that I work on that might be interesting to folks but does not necessarily belong on the official HPC website or on OIT-HPC’s YouTube channel. I will try to post them here.

  1. Hi houston junk car,

This particular site is free to me as a service from NCSU.

It is a WordPress site. I have a WordPress site that I’m paying BlueHost for, and it is about $100/year. Although since I’m not really using it, that seems pretty high right now…

You are using Google Sites (free). I tried to use that and found that I don’t like that because it wraps your links in their weird Google code. Oh, and no blog capabilities, as you’ve found already.

I have a ‘business’ website that is pretty near free since it is a simple, static website (only html) and I set that up myself using AWS and S3 (which is not for beginners!). No blog capabilities.

If you will use the website for business, you want it managed, and also pay the extra for SSL certificate. (Above includes SSL plus whatever other security features they have). That is because security is important, and you don’t want to have to deal with that yourself. If you at some point want to accept payment on the site, then you would need even more security (PCI), but I think you can avoid that by just using PayPal.

That’s maybe a long winded way of saying that BlueHost might be a good option for starting a web blog.

    Good Luck,
    Lisa

  2. I know this if off topic but I’m looking into starting my own weblog and was curious what all is required to get set up?
I’m assuming having a blog like yours would cost a
pretty penny? I’m not very internet smart so I’m not 100% positive.
Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Kudos
